How do I avoid being tricked by car sellers? What do I do if a car seller tricked me?
Most transactions that involve used cars end up well
. However, there may be some instances where buyers end up being shortchanged as they realized that they did not get what they paid for. Incidents happen where a seller consciously conceals information that might adversely affect the success of a sale, often to the detriment of the buyer.
Just a few months ago, the Canada's Automobile Protection Association (APA) released a documentary video about this, The video showed the wicked tricks that many unscrupulous car sellers employ in order to fool their buyers into believing that the junk their selling aren't what they are. This has led the APA to fail the City of Vancouver after the former found out that there is an alarming number of local car dealers who engage in such practices.
Does this also happen in Ontario? That is something that may be difficult to determine. However, each prospective car buyer can take some measures to greatly minimize the risk of being defrauded, and here they are.
Read more about cars.
It is not enough that you think that the seller looks honest enough. You must read and learn more about cars how they work, how they should look like, and all the nitty gritty details that come with owning one of them. Many people have this tendency to be comfortable about buying a car just because the dealer or the seller is a smooth talker, along with the fact that they often get taken over by sheer excitement.
You are already reading this article, so that's a good start. However, also read other articles that tackle topics like how to inspect a car, how to choose the right person to deal with, and the like. These articles will help you come up with educated decisions more easily.
Consult Watchdogs
There are many not-for-profit organizations or government agencies that provide helpful information. The information is aimed to help potential buyers in avoiding situations where they will be disadvantaged. Usually, these organizations act as a watchdog by vigilantly guarding the market from shady individuals and businesses.
Organizations like the Ministry of Transportation, the Automobile Protection Association, and the Better Business Bureau Canada, are just some of the agencies that we are talking about. These agencies regularly collect feedback from consumers. There have been many cases of potential fraud that were avoided simply because the buyers took these agencies' expert advice seriously.
But I already got tricked! What should I do?
Unfortunately, getting the issue rectified is dependent on several factors. If you purchased a used car from a private individual on an as-is,where-is basis, there is little that can be done. The same goes for purchases made from car dealerships.
However, intentional fraud is another story. In instances where an intentionally false representation happened, then you can forward the complaint to the Ministry of Transportation or even file a lawsuit against the person or company that sold the faulty car. The grounds include illegally tampering with the used car's UVIP in order to conceal disparaging information like the used car's involvement in a previous accident.
The process may be time consuming and nerve wracking, so much so that the moral of this whole story is that an ounce of prevention is much, much better than a pound of cure.
