How do I make garden good compost?

Making garden compost is actually letting nature take its course and what I mean by that is that it happens naturally, all around us, most of the time.

Composting is a natural degradation process that takes place in gardens and in nature, whereby microbes, insects and other creatures break down material by feeding on it and the resulting material, compost then becomes a sort of plant food.

It isn't complicated, in fact the more you let compost compost without intervention the better it will work.

For the best results you need to decide whether you have a regular supply of a small amount of composting material, or bucketfuls every week or so. If you only create a little waste but often, then you may be better off using a wormery or a Bokashi Bin, but for larger amounts a garden composting system will cope well.

Some gardeners just have a heap, usually in a corner of the garden for their compost. This will work, but generally compost heaps spread over large areas. It is better to confine your compost heap to a bin of some sort. This can be home made from pallets, or you may choose a plastic, Dalek shaped model. Bear in mind that you need to be able to easily access the contents, so look for a bin with a generous door' or one that can be lifted off the contents.

To make good compost you need to make sure you have a good mix of wet and dry material in roughly equal quantities. If you add lots of grass cuttings, then alternate it with layers of dry leaves, shredded wood, or shredded cardboard or paper.

The composting process is mostly achieved by naturally occurring organisms and bugs and these need to be able to access your compost bin. To achieve this you need to place your compost bin over open soil, this allows soil microbes, worms and other beneficial creatures to enter into the contents of your bin. This also allows excess moisture to drain out. If rodents are a problem it is a good idea to place the bin over a sheet of fine mesh, strong, galvanised wire. However a compost bin that is attended to daily or on a regular basis is not an attractive shelter for rodents, so bear this in mind.

While working on your waste they use up nutrients such as Nitrogen and create heat in the process. Where you are composting a vast amount of waste all at once, such as lawn clippings, you may notice that the heap becomes very hot; this is called a fast heap and is what many gardeners aspire to, as the heat will kill many weed seeds, pests and diseases.

The converse is a slow heap that goes through the same process, just more slowly and is what most gardeners create in their compost bins and heaps.
