How do you get into amateur racing?
Auto racing is one of the world's most watched and best loved sports
, and like any sport it's natural to want to get involved and put your own skills to the test. Thanks to the emergence of amateur racing clubs and events, you no longer have to be a professional to take your car out onto the racetracks.
While rally events are a great way to experience a race course in your own car, single seater racing offers the biggest high-octane thrills that can make even newcomers to the sport feel like professional racers. It's easier to get involved in amateur racing than you might think, with many countries operating their own racing series that conform to the same safety and racing regulations as the pro series.
If you're serious about getting involved in races regularly, rather than just a one-off, it's a good idea to check out any racing clubs in your local area, where you'll be able to meet like-minded people, learn the ins-and-outs of the sports and make important connections in the business that could pay off further down the line.
You should also find out about the different types of license required for racing as opposed to rallying, which could mean you have to sign up to a short racing course and take a written and practical exam to make sure you'll be safe out on the tracks and won't cause danger to yourself or other racers, avoiding crashes and services such as
side window replacement each time you head to the pits. Many of these courses can be completed in as little as half a day, though more in-depth courses are available.
There are even more opportunities for amateur racing if you're a student, or have a keen interest in all stages of the racing process, including vehicle design and manufacture. Competitions such as Formula SAE offer a chance for budding racers to work together in teams and come up with the ultimate single seater car, which can then be taken out onto the racetrack and put to the test.
If you decide single seater racing isn't for you, there are plenty of other options that could prove just as entertaining, such as kart racing. Many of the world's racing professionals began their careers on the kart tracks, and the skills you learn could be vital if you decide to progress to events such as the Formula BMW series.
