Down syndrome is one of the most common causes of learning disabilities
. Down syndrome occurs due to the change in a singular gene within the egg prior to it being fertilised at the time of conception by the sperm.
The change in the gene within the egg can happen to anyone. However, research suggests that it is more common in mothers that are older. The frequency throughout the world of Down syndrome occurring is approximately 3 per 2000 births.
During pregnancy Down syndrome tests can be performed to get an early diagnosis, this is generally done around 15 to 16 weeks. The Down syndrome test is known as an amniocentesis.
A Down syndrome test is carried out using an extremely fine needle, which is then inserted into the womb and is always performed using the guidance of an ultrasound scan. Amniotic fluid from around the baby is then sampled. The test is carried out under local anaesthetic and the majority of women who have this done do not find that it is uncomfortable. However, you will be advised that there is a risk having this procedure done, as around 1 to 200 spontaneous miscarriages can occur after this procedure.
Due to the chances of miscarriage, an amniocentesis will only be offered to women who are thought to be of high risk. You must always discuss the facts with your partner or midwife prior to having the test done and also discuss if you would terminate the pregnancy if the results showed that your baby had Down syndrome.
If this is not something that you would consider, then it would be unlikely that you would have the Down syndrome test. It is extremely important to remember that children with Down syndrome can still live a long and happy life.
