How to Be Creative - Why Every Day is the Only Way
How to Be Creative - Why Every Day is the Only Way
And then you can forget worrying about not being be able to create, and simply enjoy yourself.
One of the, if not THE, most crucial element to this is creating regularly.
If you only create now and again, only "when I have time", then your creativity never gets a chance to relax, explore, play and create what you're truly capable of creating.
You creativity is like a muscle. To keep it as strong and flexible as possible, on standby and ready to spring into action at a moment's notice, it needs regular exercise and nourishment.
Since we operate on a daily calendar, then the perfect way to do this is to create a little each day.
Before you say: "I can't possibly find time to create every day, I struggle to find time once a week!", I'm not suggesting you create for 4 or 8 or 12 hours solid each day.
What's key here is starting to build a daily creativity habit. So, every day you create, as automatically and easily as eating, breathing, sleeping.
Yes, creativity is THAT fundamental to your life, and if you try to think what it would be like to try to switch off your mind and stop it having any creative thoughts and ideas, you'd realise how impossible that is, and how embedded creativity is in your daily life anyway.
So, start with 15 minutes each day.
If that feels too much, then think on this for a moment. There are 24 hours in every day, meaning 15 minutes (a quarter of just one of those hours) is only one part out of 96 quarter hour periods in a full day.
If you can't commit to one period of creative time, amidst 95 time periods doing other stuff, then maybe you need to seriously ask yourself how important it really is for you to create.
Still with me? Good.
What tends to work best from my experience with myself, and in being a Creativity Coach to others, is to set a fairly fixed time of day to begin with, to get that habit up and running.
If you have the attitude that fitting 15 minutes in a day is easy and keep saying throughout the day: "Yeh I've got loads of time, I'll fit it an later" then it's likely the day will be over before you know it and you're will hit the pillow realising that you didn't quite manage to squeeze that 15 minutes of creating in today. Again.
It's far better to decide on the time you're going to creative in advance and save yourself spending the whole day with the pressure hanging over you that you still haven't done your 15 minutes of creating!
You'll know from experience what time works better for you. Do you feel more creative first thing in the morning? Mid afternoon? Late at night? As with all things you do to support your creativity, do what works for you.
Try this for just a couple of weeks - creating for 15 minutes at the same time every day - and you'll notice a significant difference.
Then you can adjust the time of day if it's not quite working as well as it could be, maybe extend the length of time your create, and so on. Change just one thing at a time though or you won't be able to tell which adjustment has which effect on your creativity.
Every day is the ONLY way when it comes to learning how to be as creative as you can be and tapping into your full potential.
And the best day is to start is today! Set aside 15 minutes, today and every day for the next 2 weeks at least. You owe it to your creativity, and to the world waiting to be inspired and moved by what you create.
