How to Beat the Winter Blues by Volunteering at a Hospital or Church

If you find yourself dreading the rapid approach of winter this year

, or you are reading this article during the winter, then you must be someone who suffers from the winter blues, since that is what the title of this article is about. The winter blues can be everything from just a general lack of energy or desire, to full blown depression. One of the major culprits that cause the winter blues is folks often find themselves stuck inside on the them cold winter days with nothing to do.

First of all, a person with nothing to do, is what I would consider a very lucky person, but that's just me thinking that way. I often wish there was a lot more hours in the day, to get things done, and so don't most other people, in fact a lot of us don't have time to get the winter blues. If you do find the winter blues creeping in your life this season, why not take up an activity to help beat it, like Volunteering at a Hospital or Church event.

What are some of the things that you may be needed to do when volunteering at a Hospital:

1. Transport food carts to Medical-Surgical areas or other such units


2. Pass out water pictures or food trays to patients

3. Help transport wheel chair patients to x-ray, physical therapy, or other such areas

4. Help transport wheel chair or walking patients to lobby areas, or other places when they are leaving the facility upon discharge

5. Help the buildings appearance by picking up trash or cigarette butts outside, sweep sidewalks, etc

What are some of the physical things you may be needed to do when volunteering at a Church:

1. Help set up or break down bible study rooms, day care areas, or dining rooms

2. Help the building and grounds appearance outside by mowing grass, trimming weeds, sweeping the sidewalks, etc

3. Vacuum carpets and runners, wash windows and clean window sills inside

4. Dust pews, podiums and other wood items

5. Help prepare meals or pass out food during Church dinners

6. Wash dishes and help out with cleaning up after dinners

The physical things you may be asked to do by volunteering at a Hospital or Church, are very good for the body because they help keep you active and more physically fit during the cold winter months, when a lot of people become sedentary and put on more weight.

The mental benefits of volunteering are limitless, as you will meet new people, and can socialize with others, it will give you a great feeling of job and accomplishment knowing you have helped others without requiring money, best of all, you now have something to do in the winter, to help beat the winter blues.
