Almost every home has a coffee table. It can be considered the center of a room and is getting more popular. If you are thinking about purchasing a new coffee table there are some things you should know before making that buy.

First of all what is going to be the purpose of the table? Is it going to be placed in a room where there is lots of traffic or is it going to be used more as a decorative piece?

Here's a little hint, if it's decoration you are going for do not put more than one or two items on the table. If your living space is small buy a table with a shelf or some storage space to place items in. On the other hand if you are placing the table in a high traffic area make sure you choose a durable material that can withstand the abuse.

The material that your table is made of is also something to think about. Wood is probably the most popular choice for a coffee table so maybe this is where you would like to start looking.

Glass tables are excellent if you have carpet or a beautiful area rug underneath and you would like it to show through. They are also great in small rooms because they look like they do not take up too much space.

Leather tables are also something you may consider as they are very stylish and durable.

If you do not have much space and a large coffee table is not an option try using two smaller coffee tables placed side by side instead.

The style of adjacent furniture, especially your sofa, is very important when choosing your coffee table. Never buy your table the same length as your sofa. About half the length of the sofa should be sufficient.

Try to buy your table the same height as the seats of your sofa. You should still measure the space that you have set aside for your table.

You may be asking yourself what shape your new table should be, round, rectangular, oval or square. Well that can also depend on the shape of your sofa. If your sofa has angular lines, try a rectangular table. If the sofa has a more rounded shape on the arms and back, go for a round table.

Avoid impulse buying. Shop around at different places before you make a final decision on your purchase.

If you have a tight budget, stick to it.

Once you've done all your homework and took your time, buying that new coffee table should not be much of a problem.
