If you think that you're good in getting things done why not get onto the management ladder and make wider use of your skills? You don't need experience, you need motivation to get onto the first rung. You know that you can do it but does anyone else know it? It's time that you let them know. No one was born with experience and we all have to start somewhere. What really matters at the start is the commitment, the desire to succeed.

Start with your own organisation. Tell them why you should be considered . Tell them how you see the job and how you will handle it to make it more profitable. If you have had a good appraisal point it out. Why are you good at your job? What have you done that stands out? How do you envisage improving things? What will you bring to the business? Make your application stand out and tell them why you think that not only you can do the job but more important what you will achieve for them. When you start believing in yourself then others will notice and believe in you as well.

Getting your foot on the ladder as a group leader or a supervisor will launch you in a new adventure. After that you'll grow and climb the steps to the top. The higher you go the easier it'll get, because you'll have people and teams to support you. Management is a lot of common sense and commitment and you should not be put off by the aura created around it. . Not everyone has what it takes though but if you think that you do, then you have a good advantage. If you want to achieve something its best that you start by making decisions for yourself. Management is about people, about attention to detail, knowing what you want to do and mapping out ways to get there.

Companies rely on people like you. Senior managers are always on the look out for potential talent. It's on people like you that they rely to get things done

To climb up the ladder you will certainly need effort but more than that you will need education and training. Trying to find how to do things by trial and error is not an option; you need a framework to work to, you need the education that will guide you and provide you with the tools to do the job and climb with less effort. The two go together. You need the theory to start you off and then you need to practise it. One without the other is of little use.

Find out what are the critical issues and how others have tackled them. Get books and attend a college at night to become well equipped. Improvement in your knowledge is a big advantage to your organization. Think of what you can really bring into the company that justifies your ambition. The more you bring the higher you'll go.

The key to successful management is really people. Staff, customers, suppliers, public authorities, wherever you turn you are involved with others. You need to have the interest in others to identify those that have the qualities to help you. You may not know how to do something but you may know someone who does. Don't be afraid to recognise the talents of others. Only a confident and able person has the ability to recognise others. Those who really make the decisions have been there before, and know to spot those that bring extra value to the company.


You have to set an example to others and you cannot set standards that you cannot meet yourself. You cannot ask others to do what you are not prepared to do yourself. Provide leadership and others will follow. Do not score points off others because they will become resentful and will not support you when you need them. Do not make promises that you know you cannot keep. People have long memories and you are in for the long term. Try to promise less and deliver more.

A helping hand to others will pay dividends later. Always be well prepared. Build up your communication skills. Understand others and tailor your messages so that they fully understand you. Improve your written, and spoken delivery and listen carefully to others.

Good relationships, good preparation, clear vision of what you have to do and why. Set your priorities to what is important and relevant. Learn to select and to delegate to others so as to have a chance to think about where you want to go and not where you are being taken by the current. Try to anticipate change so that you are in control and not swept by it

Take control of your time because it's easy to be sidetracked. Keep a list of what has to be done every day and think about your work off line so that when you go on line you know what has to be done and are not sidetracked by irrelevant events around you.
