Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve which runs from the lower back, thighs, buttocks and into the back of one leg, gets injured. The injury itself can happen as a result of a herniated disc which protrudes on to the nerve, or it may happen on account of narrowing of the spinal canal. It may also happen on account of tightening of the piriformis and hamstring muscles in the thigh and buttocks. Treatment consists in bringing about relaxation of the muscles, and moving them such that the pressure on the nerve gets relieved.
This is done in several ways, exercise being one of them. Certain very simple limb movements as specified by a trained physiotherapist, can be done to bring about relief. Stretching and flexing of the limbs and back as per instructions, is generally sufficient. Some such exercises are described below:
1 Sit on the floor with legs outstretched before you, and knees straight
Slowly reach forward with your arms and try to touch your toes. Hold for 5 seconds, and
Repeat 5 times.
2 While standing straight, cross your right foot over your left one. Slowly bring your forehead to touch your right knee. Hold for 5 seconds, relax and repeat with alternate leg.
These are the simplest of the exercises prescribed. Other slightly advanced ones can be taken up gradually.
One of the most potent remedies for sciatica is a hot stinging nettle bath. 4 cups of the leaves are soaked in water overnight, warmed, strained and added to the bath water. After bath, the body should not be dried with a towel, but the person should wear a robe and sweat in bed for an hour.
Certain oils, like oil of wintergreen, or St.John's wort oil or evening primrose oil, when applied to the affected area, brings considerable relief. Alternatively poultices of horse-radish (to be taken for minimum 1 hour) or mustard seeds (for max 10 minutes only) or crushed flaxseed (poultice to be dipped in hot water before applying) can bring about similar results.
Chamomile is a popular muscle relaxant. It can be applied directly on the skin, or taken internally as tea, or 10-20 drops of the extract can be taken in water, daily, till the pain subsides.
Some juices, such as that of potato and celery leaves, or elderberry leaves, also have a calming effect on the nerves. Vitamin B1 supplements or foods rich in this vitamin, can be taken with advantage.
Sciatica will not last for long if the above home remedies are carried out regularly and diligently.
One's overall health should be taken care of, as also one's posture. If all the above are done carefully, one will be free from sciatica for a long time to come.
