If you're a student or going to be a student anytime soon, you have already witnessed the horror stories of how much textbooks can be marked at. It's a bad dream or experience for a lot of students who are already taking out loans and working jobs to make it through college, so how can you make less the money you spend on books to the bare minimum? Finding inexpensive used textbooks is one of the best ways to save money, but there are some great ways to find those books that will save you even more money down the road.
#1. - Do you even need the book? A lot of college courses have required textbooks and then suggested or recommended books. In many cases you'll never even open the recommended book and if the course doesn't list them separately email your teacher and ask them if you really need both books.
#2. - Is there a nearby college store that has cheap used textbooks for sale? Many larger schools have nearby stores that specialize in nothing more than buying back and re-selling college textbooks. This is a good place to look for cheap books but a lot of the time you can only expect to save $10 or less between one of these stores and your school's own book store. Sometimes you can get a good deal if you get in soon enough before the semester.
#3. - Online book stores are a good place to get a deal, but just like with brick and mortar style stores you need to get in before the student book rush to make sure you get a good deal. As the demand for the book goes up, so does the price. The fewer books available, the more money people are willing to spend to get their hands on it. That being said some stores can help you get great deals if you time your shopping right (i.e. RIGHT before beginning a semester or quarter).
