To achieve this, you may need to feed your cat more frequent smaller meals rather than a large meal twice a day. However, you should take care not to overfeed your cat, especially if weight is already an issue.
When you feed your cat, it is helpful to speak in quiet soothing tones. Try stroking your cat, but if he, or she, is resistant to your touch do not force the issue.
Try engaging in interactive play. Ensure that you have lots of interesting toys, such as fishing poles and balls. Bear in mind, the more time you are able to spend with your cat, the more he, or she, will want to spend with you.
If your cat has a favorite spot, by the fire or another cozy place, try sitting there and encouraging your cat over to you. You may like to entice him, or her, with a treat or toy. Alternatively, just sit quietly and wait for the cat to approach you. When the cat does sit with you, speak in soothing tones and try stroking him, or her.
When other methods fail, you may like to consider encouraging your cat to sit with you by using catnip. Most cats are attracted by the scent of catnip and will be relaxed and soothed by it. If your cat is particularly aloof, this method may prove very useful.
Of course, it is important to remember that some cats are naturally aloof and it will be hard, if not impossible to make those individuals affectionate. However, the above techniques can help to modify a cat's behavior.
