How to Find Your Goals

How to Find Your Goals

How to Find Your Goals

Occasionally I see people complaining that they don't have any goals they want to achieve. In that case knowing how to set goals is useless, and your problem lies in finding out what you want to do.

It's more likely you will have some idea at least of the goals you want to achieve and you might not feel that this article is relevant to you. I believe, however, that by looking at where goals come from you will be able to get a deeper understanding of your own goals and what you are really trying to achieve.

Let's start by imagining you have set yourself a goal to earn $5000 independently over the next 6 months. What are the reasons behind this goal? Notice that it is independently earned money, which indicates that you are looking to free yourself from relying on a job to support yourself. Why would you want to do this? A possible reason is you want to be able to decide yourself when you work or don't. Or perhaps you feel that working independently gives you more control over the source of your income and hence your life.

If we consider longer tem goals then we can see other reasons arising. Maybe the previous goal is part of a longer term goal to set up a business and be self-employed. Why would you want this? Perhaps you feel that you have a calling or purpose in life and this can be best achieved by controlling your own company.

Ultimately I think that all good goals derive from a desire to fulfill what we see as our purpose in life. It is worthwhile when you set a goal to decide why you are setting it. Look carefully at your reasons behind it. Do you see that you are fulfilling your purpose by achieving the goal or are you doing it for the benefit of someone else? Society is very good at misleading us into thinking we are setting goals for our own benefit when we actually are not. Think carefully and make sure you can see the reasons behind every goal you set.

The question of where goals come from thus reduces to the question of the meaning of life, and our purpose in life. Many, many people have attempted to find answers to this question throughout human history, and it isn't something I want to go too deeply into here.

If so many people have struggled to find a definite answer to the purpose of life then it is fair to assume that we will too. I believe that the reason it is hard to find a definite answer is because our purposes are unique to each of us. In the absence of any hard answers it is up to each one of us to find our own meaning and our own purpose in life. This is a topic which Steve Pavlina has written about extensively and I can recommend you check out his blog for some tips on finding your life purpose.

But what if you are complaining you have no interests? You could equally claim that life is meaningless to you. But does this conclusion make sense? Is it possible for life to be meaningless? Even if you believe that there is no external purpose to life, you have to accept that you exist, and will one day die. If there is no divine purpose then the most you can conclude is that life is short, and that you are here now. You must also accept that there are things that you enjoy. Perhaps there is a sport that fills you with adrenaline, or a photograph of a distant land that inspires wonder and curiosity within you. Here is the meaning you can find in life. Life is short, and we are here, why not enjoy it while you have it?

I can't believe that there is anyone who doesn't have any interests in life. If there is even one thing that excites you then do it. Start small. Make some time to just spend on that one thing. Read about it, see if anyone else is doing something similar. Don't worry about setting goals at this stage, just focus on doing what you enjoy. Once you spend more time on it you should naturally find goals arising.

If you are in position where life seems meaningless then what do you have to lose by trying this suggestion? What do you have to gain?
