How to Get Rid of Standing Water in Your Garden

How to Get Rid of Standing Water inYour Garden

Standing water in your garden is a burden that should be considered prior to the actual operation, because it causes too much work and incurs great operational expenses in your part.

There are some gardeners who would ask me how to deal with this problem in their garden, some would just plainly ignore it, but later return to me for assistance.

To simply ignore standing water in your garden would make the problem becoming worst and would entail much greater problem in the long run.

Standing water is prevalent during heavy rainfall where the rain water accumulates long enough in the garden especially if your soil is clayey and drainage canal is not properly installed.

Things You Should Do to Solve Standing Water

1) Buy Plastic Pipe Select a 4 inches perforated flexible plastic pipe.

2) Dig a canal at the center of the low lying area of your garden. This canal you'll dig is where you'll install the 4" perforated flexible plastic pipe. Make sure that your canal is pointing towards the lower portion outside your garden.

3) Set up a line level of your canal. Run through a string from the origin of the canal to the end point to make sure the end portion is lower than the origin so that the water would run freely outside the pipe.

4) Install the pipe. Once you've done the line leveling of the canal, install the 4" pipe ( usually 100 meters/roll) in the dug canal.

5) Cover the canal with soil. After you've installed the pipe, insert a filter into the end of the pipe to prevent the soil from entering the pipe carried away together with the water. Cover the mouth of the pipe with some gravel or washed stone to strain the water from solid particles that passes through the pipe. Cover the canal with soil to cancel the pipe.

6) Install a French Dain System. If your simple drainage pipe is not enough to drain out the heavy rain water, the French Drain System is the last remedy. But this is a little bit costly to install, however, it's effective and economical in the long run. To install the French Drain System you have to dig a number of shorter canals all heading away from the area where the water stands.

If you'll follow these instructions, you'll be save from loosing your home gardening venture due to water accumulation in your garden.

To do away with rain water accumulation, select the best site located in a higher elevation where water easily drains without any intervention.

Happy gardening!
