How to Get a Second Passport
As it turns out, you don't have to be code-named "007" to carry more than one passport, and having a second passport can be quite handy.
Technically, US citizens are only supposed to have one valid passport at a time. However, you can legally get around this rule and get a second duplicate passport as long as you are able to show the Department of State that you have a need for one. Here's what you'll need to send to the Department of State to make this happen:
A completed copy of passport renewal application form DS-82
Your original passport. If it is going to expire within the next year, you'll actually need to renew your original passport first, then apply for a second one.
A statement showing why you need a second passport. Include your current passport number and advise why you need the duplicate document. The most common reasons to request a second passport are: because you travel frequently and need to be able to leave the country with one passport while the other one is being sent away to have a visa added to it, or that you need another passport because the visa stamps you have in your current passport prevent you from being admitted to other countries you plan to visit. Be as specific as possible and sign and date the bottom of the statement.
One passport photo that meets State Department requirements.
Fees: $110 plus an additional $60 if you need to expedite your application.
As long as the Department of State agrees that your travel needs warrant a second passport, you should receive your new passport in approximately 6 weeks, or 3 weeks if you applied for expedited processing. Your new passport will serve you well, enabling you to travel even if one of the passports is at a foreign embassy waiting for your visa application for that country to be processed. Plus, if one passport gets lost or stolen, you'll still have the other to fall back on. However, be aware that if one of them disappears, you are required to report it as lost or stolen to the Department of State immediately.
