Free crochet patterns are out there, you just have to look for them. And once you find that perfect pattern you can ready, set, crochet. I've personally only crocheted a few scarves in my lifetime so far, but I know it takes some mad skill to get the perfect outcome when you're making your project.

If you make an afghan like many people do you can start out making granny squares. Once you have all your squares you can start joining your pieces together. Now I know people say not to tie knots in your work, but there are plenty of designers and crocheters out there who do, it's okay.

In order to join your crochet pieces place them side by side then grab the yarn and pull it through one of the corners. It's easier to work with if you tie a half knot before you start crocheting. If you don't like the knot when you're finishing you can take the knot out and weave the ends in. Put the needle through the back of the loop on the other side a row up from the one you started on.

Make sure you come up from underneath the loop. Keep doing the stitch from one side to the other until the top of the section is reached. Always make sure you are coming up from underneath the loop and that you are only catching the back loop of the stitch.

The whip stitch is the most commonly used stitch to join your pieces together, however, you can use a slip stitch or single crochet. If you want an invisible seam you will have to use the predominant color of your pattern with the whip stitch. If you want a decorative seam you can use different joining techniques such as the single crochet and whip stitch, but be careful not to pull the stitches too tight. The yarn will not give and it might cause the work to ripple or pull, something you don't want to happen.

Once your pieces have been joined you will have one beautiful afghan or piece of clothing. Crochet an afghan for yourself or give it as a gift. Handmade gifts are always so special.
