How to Keep a Sharp Mind No Matter How Old You Are
When it comes to physical necessities, the brain needs the same nutrients the body does
. The only difference lies in how the brain is used. Many people are physically fit, but their mental skills are poor. To improve mental functioning, the brain needs to be exercised.
Mental health is important if you hope to get through a typical fast-paced day.
A Healthy Diet
Brain and the body are linked together. America's favorite diet consists of highly processed and refined foods which do little to supply essential nutrients for good physical and mental health. Long before physical symptoms star to show, the brain begins to suffer. Depression, fear, headaches and other mental disorders are the signs that the brain is not getting sufficient nutrients. The brain needs vitamins C, D, E, folic acid and B vitamins to stay sharp and focused. And those nutrients can only come from a high fiber diet.
Exercise for Cognitive Function
Exercise improve the circulation that gets oxygen to the brain. It's a tonic that rids the body of the toxins and poisons that come from living in today's polluted world. Not only does exercise improve body functions, it helps you to think clearly.
The Need for Sleep
It's the one habit that few engage in on a regular basis. Sleep doesn't come when it should. The stresses of living interfere with the need for the brain to relax and get prepared for sleeping and much of that mental over activity comes from an improper diet and the lack of daily exercise.
The Must-Have Meal of the Day
The hectic pace of life has many running and skipping out on the most important meal of the day. Going without breakfast leads to a tired brain through the day. Just as it is important to wind down for sleeping, it's just as important to prepare for the workday ahead. Skipping breakfast or eating a meal of refined breads, sugary cereals with sweetened orange juice and coffee do not provide the energy needed for a productive day.
Exercise for the Mind
Weight lifting and aerobics are beneficial for the body, but the mind needs some mental exercises to keep it sharp. Sadly, many go through life living in a fog. A sharp mind can't solve problems, based on logic and experience. But many would rather apply quick fix solutions that don't require a great deal of thought. It's not surprising that those who engage in games and tasks that require the use of mental skills are often more focused and can resolve difficulties without fear or worry. You may see them doing crossword puzzles, playing chess or solving Sudoku puzzles.
Drugs
The world is toxic enough without filling body and mind with drugs made mostly of chemicals foreign to the body and the mind. Drugs may provide relief for the problem, but their side effects affect other parts of the body and the mind. If medications weren't enough, many people have habits that severely impact health. Smoking and alcohol are drugs. Smoking has no benefits while an occasional drink can be helpful. But too many drink in excess and a mind soaked with alcohol won't stay healthy for long.
Keeping your mind sharp is a matter of eliminating those factors that are causing it to age beyond its years. The more you nourish that gray matter, the more it will help you and your body to live longer and healthier beyond the average man on the street.
