Films are just for entertainment or, at best, marvelling at artistic achievement

- that's what movie magazines, television shows and advertising - would have us believe in any case.

Once in a while, though, a film can be much more. It can shine a mirror onto life and help us to learn something really true.

By that, I don't necessarily mean that films like this need to be introduce the sort of facts you'd use to impress people with - facts with dates, percentages or bar graphs.

For example, Kramer vs. Kramer might not have told you anything real about the US legal system - in fact, under the eighties New York legal system Mrs Kramer wouldn't have been able to get sole custody - but it did say something much more important about difficult relationships between divorced parents.

For the purposes of this article, though, we'll stick with the actual fact-like facts.

For accessing the films with the fact-like facts DVD rental could be a good option, since one rarely feels the need to watch 'Beer - An Insider's Guide' on multiple occasions.

Many of the big DVD rental site such as Lovefilm and Blockbuster have educational or documentary film sections and user reviews which can help you to find the most interesting and fact-like of the factual films.

Some documentaries aren't as dry as you might expect - look at Chris Brown's 'Good Hair', for example, which is about the huge industry in fake hair all over the world but particularly amongst the African-American community in the United States.

Other documentaries noted for their watchability as well as their clear headed grasp of the facts are Morgan Spurlock's 'Fast Food Nation' and Michael Moore films such as 'Bowling for Columbine'.

Other less well known DVDs that could help you to do some learning while you watch are 'Bananas!' - a film about a legal case bought against Dole foods after they were found to have used a banned pesticide - and 'South of the Border' - a film about South America's current presidents and other leaders and the misperceptions about them in what we laughingly call The West.
