How does one make money by creating music? It's a tough lifestyle if you're not one of the very few artists who manage to break into the top charting positions. However, there are still plenty of opportunities and plenty of money to be made.
We are indeed amongst a digital revolution in all aspects of life. It's happening so quickly that it's hard to recognize yesterday's world today. Technology is quickly changing the way we work, think, create, and even destroy. Technology has certainly changed the way we create music as well as the ease at which it is distributed. With all these artists out there trying to hit it big, my question stands: how does one make money by creating music?
The simple answer is to create a hit song and become a superstar. Unfortunately, that is much harder than it sounds.
After struggling for a while at this, most artists give up, failing to realize the other opportunities that exist within the music industry, much less knowing how to tap into them.
The first thing an artist can do is think about the amazing affect music can have on a listener. Music has never been more popular in everyday life and never have so many people identified themselves by the music they enjoy. Listeners can relate to music. They can cherish music. They can identify with music.
Artists need to embrace these truths.
Now think of all the places or things that use music as a means of communication.
Video games, movies, commercials, brandsthe list never ends. Video games are trying to stay ahead of the curve by having the coolest new music; brands are trying to identify with certain groups or niches by establishing partnerships with artists as they work on defining their company's brand; music for commercials sets the tone and creates the buying desire within a consumer. Again, the list goes on.
Now if an artist can find a perfect blend of these two things and solicit themselves as a business rather than a band or musician, success may be imminent.
What I mean by this is run your music career as if it were a business. Far too often do artists sit in the reclined position hoping that someone who is "business savvy" will take over the day-to-day "business" operations of their own career. Instead, artists need to act like CEOs and put their product in the hands of the perfect consumer. The perfect consumer in this case are brands and/or companies.
One way an artist can do this is by creating music around a definite image. If you're a touring act, establishing a loyal following around this image is also key. Creating music around this image will give an artist the ability to market themselves for any number ofmusic licensing positions.
Brands wanting to attract the niche groups that surround your image will most likely be attracted to your song or soundit now is the artist's job to convince them of this truth.
Here's where the CEO training comes into play. Present yourself professionally, explain your image and purpose, define the connection between brand and consumer, and explain how your song or sound will bridge that gap.
Failure is bound to happen, don't let that discourage you. But as you work on honing in on the certain characteristics that define who the target market is, your material will get better and better.
Think about the original iPod commercials. What kind of characteristics do you think Apple was looking for in the songs they chose? Who exactly where they trying to target? What does their overall company image portray? Ask yourself these questions.
Identify with the brand, and create as if you were a consumer.
This is not meant to be a step-by-step guide to success. This is arguably the hardest part of the creation process and no article can claim to be a perfect formula for success. Instead, let this be a catalyst to the new face of your musical career.
