How to Make Your Garden Greener

Planting a garden in your yard can be good for the environment

. However, many gardens also require natural resources in order to prosper. That is why it is so important that gardeners remain conscious of the amount of water, light, and other resources that are being used to feed plants. If you have a garden in your yard, here are some ways that you can make it environmentally greener.

Don't Over Water

It is an unfortunate fact that the majority of people over water their gardens. Some people simply do not know how much water their plants need, others accidentally leave the hose or sprinklers on too long. In order to prevent overwatering, you can set your sprinkler or irrigation system on automatic timers that turn on for a short period of time in the evening. You can even purchase timers that change the amount of water that is used based on the weather and season.

Use Native Plants

To reduce water use further, consider planting trees, shrubs, and flowers that are native to the area in which you live. Native plants not only require less water, they require less maintenance and care so you don't have to spend a lot of time tending to your garden.

Use Organic Pesticides and Fertilizers

When pests attack your garden, it can be extremely frustrating considering that you have put so much time, money, and effort into its maintenance. This leads many people to head straight to the nearest gardening store to pick up a poisonous pesticide that will kill the specific type of pest that is infesting your garden. However, you should avoid using pesticides as they not only harm bugs and rodents, they can also harm your plant and the environment. Try using organic products or other measures to protect your garden from pests.
