How to Prevent and Manage Acid Reflux Cough
How to Prevent and Manage Acid Reflux Cough
When acid regurgitated back to the esophagus, the esophagus tend to reflex resulting in airway spasm that leads to coughing and sudden shortness of breath. This is a more serious complication of acid reflux which generally requires immediate treatment. Aside from reflux cough, a person suffering from frequent bouts will likely develop inflammation in the larynx and throat because of the corrosive assault of acid that back up to the esophagus. If the condition worsens, it may be detrimental + to the linings of the airway that is generally manifested by other symptoms like hoarseness of voice and gullet pain.
One more risky occurrence that could develop if acid backs up to the larynx is the threat of aspiration pneumonia. It is not the general pneumonia as the name may entail but considerably it is a medical term for critical pneumonia that calls fast medical attention. To prevent this from happening do not lie down immediately after eating. Because more people are practicing the unhealthy habit of midnight snack, heartburn and reflux typically becomes a nightmare experience for many.
Although it is clear that severe type of acid reflux or GERD can cause and/or exacerbate reflux cough, research has not yet firmly established the relation the symptom and the condition.
On the other hand, it is a condition that needs instant attention and care (not the coughing symptom but the underlying cause). If it is of acidity reasons, no mucolytics would be favorable. Before treating this 'so-called reflex cough' symptom, it is best to associate it with the typical symptoms of acidity to make sure the cough is due to exacerbated acid reflux( consult a physician for further assessment) then go with the treatment. Take the following suggestions in treating reflux cough:
Talk to your health care provider and take the presecribed drugs and medications such as PPIs or proton pump inhibitors that decreases acid productions in the stomach, however, prolonged use is not advisable as such may result to other serious complication.
Make sure to eat healthy, avoiding foods that are high in cholesterol. One major rule: No spicy food!
Eat properly at the right time and never miss out on breakfast as much as possible. Chew gums (they help stimulate salivary gland to produce fluid that neutralizes the acidity).
Lose excess pounds. ( Will take pressure off the lower esophageal sphincter which cause the reflux )
Quit old habits like smoking ( it exacerbates chronic cough and may lead to bronchitis)
After a meal, sit upright for at least an hour or so. ( Gravity allows the food to go down the stomach so that it won't go back to the esophagus)
After a meal, try to delay drinking water for 30 minutes. Or you may consume some of it while eating.
It is highly recommended by health care providers to eat small frequent meals to avoid acid reflux.
