If you are a brick and mortar business, breaking onto the internet marketing scene may seem a bit overwhelming

First you should define what you consider a successful marketing campaign to be. The answer will be different for every business. One advertising strategist explains, "My boss likes to ask: We are opening a bottle of Champagne to celebrate your success. What would that success be?'" Would you consider your marketing ideas a success if they gained you a hundred new customers? Or would simply followers on your Facebook page equal success to you? Thinking through and defining what success means for your business at this point is crucial to starting any new marketing campaign because it gives you a baseline to revisit later. For example let's say you are starting a campaign to gain ten thousand new Twitter followers. A year from now, if you have succeeded at that goal you can set a larger one. Since your goal is clearly defined, you can easily tell if you have reached it and if you are ready to set a larger goal.

Ask yourself, "In a year from now, what goals would I like to have achieved with our efforts?" and "How will I measure the success of this campaign?" Understanding what your goals are before becoming entrenched in a marketing strategy is fundamental to not failing at a marketing push. Remember, objective, quantifiable goals are much easier to reach than ambiguous and elusive purposes. Clear goals also help you brainstorm effective marketing strategies. For example, if your goal is to get more Facebook followers than you already know you can focus your attention on social media marketing and ignore such strategies as pay-per-click advertisements since they won't help you reach your goal.
