How to Test Horse Racing Systems to Find a Winning Handicapping Method
Winning horse racing methods don't just drop out of the sky and usually require a lot of work to develop. Like any other process, they involve research and a few "aha" moments. It not only takes inspiration to find what works when handicapping races, it also takes persistence.
One of the most successful men of the twentieth century was the inventor, Edison. He patented a thousand inventions that made life better for millions of people. When asked how he'd perfected the light bulb he replied that he found a thousand ways that didn't work. The same is true of perfecting a good horse racing system. Unless you're psychic, you have to do what everybody else does and try one thing after another until you figure out what works and what doesn't work.
It's no different than learning to walk. You get the idea and ask yourself, "What if?" for instance, what if you combined a horse with a good series of workouts with a weight drop in its next race? Then you start following those horses that you find and keep notes about them. You keep notes about any other factors you can think of and you follow trends to see if anything presents itself.
You might notice that there seems to be more promise for these plays in longer races or with younger horses. Whatever presents itself has to be tested. The testing itself has to follow pretty rigid guidelines because if you change just one little thing, you change everything. So before you begin, you have to commit to a pretty long haul and also make sure you've got it set up exactly the way you want to test it.
There is a lot of debate about testing methods on a computer and testing them in real life. I'm afraid I'm old school when it comes to that. I prefer real tests. I don't mean you should bet a lot of money on an unproven system, but I do think you have to go to the track or OTB and try it out. Over the years I've found a lot of things in life that looked good on paper but didn't hold up in real life. You may have noticed the same thing. That's why, as time consuming and frustrating as it may be, I still test everything in the heat of battle. For me, it's the only way to do it.
