How to buy your first puppy
Dogs are one of the most popular pets, especially puppies are adorable little bundles of joy, that beg you to take them home. Please don't make the decision to buy a puppy spontaneously, it should be thought about carefully. Often, we find puppies being resold or sent to the pound, because of these spur of the minute decisions. It is not the poor puppy's fault, the uneducated owned is to be blamed. Buying A Pet Before you buy a pet, keep in mind the kind of dog you want. Do you want a hyperactive puppy, or a couch-potato? Make the decision keeping your lifestyle in mind. Talk to several owners about the breed you are interested in. Remember a puppy is a big responsibility and he/she is depending on you to take care and love him/her for life. Where Do I Buy My Pup? If you are looking for specific traits in your puppy, you will need to select a kennel that sells pedigree dogs. If you are looking for any dog, go to the local pet store. Pet stores cost you much lesser than a kennel. You can also try out the local animal shelter or pound which will cost you $25 or less. Here are some tips to be kept in mind before you buy a puppy: 1.Make sure the pup has had its shots. They should be on written record. 2.See the parents- if possible. Visit both the mother and the father. 3.Ask to see the whole litter; so that you can pick the one best suited for you, by the way they interact with you one-on-one. 4.See the pup you want away from the rest of the litter, and how it accepts you. This is likely to show how it will behave when moved into your house. 5.See if all the documentation on the pups are up-to date. 6.Inquire about the price, you need to know if you can afford the puppy. Even if you need to make monthly payments. 7.Observe how the breeder treats the puppies and how they interact with them. See if the puppies are affectionate towards the breeder. Check if the surroundings are clean and spacious. 8.See copies of all represented documentation. Request for a set to be taken home with you, at the time of purchase. This must include the pup's AKC registration, health and pedigree records. 9.Obtain a health guarantee from your breeder. It should give you sometime to take the pup to the vet, usually 72 hours. 10.After you buy the puppy, take it to the vet. If everything is not OK, go straight back to the breeder. Raising A Pup Now that you found you perfect puppy, its time to bring it home. It is usually best if you bring the puppy home in the morning, this will give it sometime to adapt itself before sleeping in the night. Make sure somebody is there with it the whole day, as a puppy can become sad, after being separated from its litter or mother. Have a bowl of water and a supply of the same food, that the breeder was feeding your pup. At the same time have a set of soft toys, leash and a collar ready. Have a safe and spacious area for the pup to sleep and play around. All this will make the first few days of your pup with you easier. Although you will be tempted to show off your pup, it is advisable to wait awhile and keep visitors minimum. In the first year of your pup's life, it will adjust to the surroundings, and learn what to do and what not to. If it is given lots of love and care, it will grow up into a confident and friendly dog. Be sure to train your dog in a positive manner, with lots of praise and treats. Young dogs lead a very simple life, they sleep, eat, go to the bathroom and play. Feeding schedules are very important for new puppies. If your pup is under 12 weeks old, you should try to feed it 4 times a day (making sure to use soft foods), gradually shifting it over from whatever brand it was used to eating before. From 12 weeks to 6 months, you should reduce feeding to 3 times a day (again, staying with soft foods.) Feed 2 meals per day for dogs aged 6 months to 1 year, reducing to 1 meal per day (depending on size and weight) after 1 year. A Friend For Your Friend Lastly, start looking for a new friend for your puppy. Dogs are social animals, and this will show your puppy how to interact with its own kind.
