How to develop great ideas for logos, brands & corporate identity

Most of designers think, if they are excellent in software tools for designing can create a great logos for any requirement. However, it is not the true story, most of the time, we see very few designers are creative enough to develop a great logo design to get target customers mind share. Creative designers are start their logo designing work with ideas, concepts and fruition. Then they draft the concept and moving to illustrating the idea to a great design.

Before you drafting a idea and concept, just take a deep breath and start it in fresh mood, organize little more before conceptualization, read more about logo designing and business related articles, internet is awesome place to explore the content. Some libraries have good reading materials for new designers. I have seen many blog posting everyday update with their experience for successful logo designers. You should be balance, not only successful designs, you should analysis the failure designs as well, why they have failed. Then you can avoid same mistake from your design. However, this should not be limiting your creativity. It should support to improve or broaden the knowledge of logo designing.

Other most important aspect of successful logo designing is designer should be excellent in drawing, doodling and jotting ideas down. We should practice ourselves. Make a habit to maintain a own sketch book. Always illustrate what come to your mind. I have seen many successful designers have this habit. They develop their drawing skills by spending their spare time for drafting. Without a reason, you will learn to look at different things in different angles. As I mentioned above, creative designers are not the people who expert in drawing tools or software. They are the people who can view things in detail, in different angle and out of the box thinking. Finally, it will convert the unique successful logo design.

Another important point to remind you, once you doodle, do not erase anything, just leave them on your sketchbook, sometimes later, it may be a great start point for some unique design. Without asking anyone, design a logo for them, may be your office, your shopping mall, favourite brands, anything and analysis your idea and logo design, your thinking ability will grow day by day. Make a habit for this practice.

One of my friends shared his finding with me. He asked me to use a magic marker while I am drafting any illustrator. He emphasis me, it will forces me to be decisive, bold and be careful on every single line I doodle. It is actually worked for me. Before I doodle, I think many times about the idea and conceptualized it in my mind.

Another way of improving your logo designing and graphic designing skills is, benchmark few good designers and study their works. And try to analysis their work, positive and negative points. All are not perfect, many expert have weak points while poor designers have great ideas but could not execute. Whatever you see, spend few minutes to analysis it than just look and pass. Make it as a passion for your life, whenever you go, watch the logos around you and enjoy those. Really look at them, choose most attractive designs for you and your friends with you, and analysis why you select them, discuss with others, your designing ability will improve eventually.
