How to get the very best out of your employees

A compant may provide a good product or service to its customers, but if it doesn't get the best of its workforce then it could potentially notice that it's throwing away time, its budget, resources and potentially losing custom and its image. For SMEs particularly, employing the right workers is important and can make or break the business, so keeping employees motivated and happy is crucial.

Human resources it can be debated the most important resource for any company, as well as the most challenging to maintain, handle and keep content. Everyone is different and will have different wants, needs and desires. Some may put more effort into their work than their colleagues. Some will require constant reassurance while their colleagues may be best left alone to concentrate. Some may be extremely difficult to keep happy. Whatever the case, a person in a managerial position - whether it be a manager, team leader or business owner - must try to analyse and satisfy the needs of its employees in order to get the most out of them.

An employee working at their best is more resourceful, more efficient, more loyal, more productive and inspiring to others, so getting the most out of employees can be very useful to any company, regardless of its size or shape.

Here are a varierty of ways to help motivate your workers and assist them to be the best:

Appreciation and recognition - All people want to be appreciated, especially if they have done a fantastic job. Make sure to reward those who have done well and organise frequent one-to-one meetings to thank them on good work and identify areas that may need improvement (but be sure to refrain from just doing the latter).

Focus on strengths, not weaknesses - If you've employed someone to perform a certain role, you shouldn't put too much time or emphasis on trying to build up their skills in other areas. If you've hired a worker to focus on a particular area then contribute to developing what they are best at; what you employed them for; make their strengths even stronger. Obviously you do not want all of your workers working on only one area each, just in case there is a problem if an employee is ill or on leave, but at the same time, to ask someone to work on their weaknesses unnecessarily might be disheartening for them and a waste of their time and talents.

Donate time to additional activities - Carrying out the same job for 40 hours per week can be draining, monotonous and boring, especially when it is a repetitive job with little variety, such as data entry or call centre work. Whether it is just a few hours or a day per week, set some time aside in order to allow employees to focus on other activities, whether it's training, research and development or working on an interesting project.

Behind every efficient worker is a team leader or manager who knows how to lead and manage their workers. Getting the best out of them should mean getting the most out of your business.
