How to lose a Beer Gut

I will not assume that 99% of men are reading this because I know a few female friends that have a small beer gut, it is very easy to obtain and a pain in the neck to lose. A beer gut usually forms when you settle down and get married, go off to college and start drinking, lose physical activity, etc. No matter where you got that pouch on your belly, it's time to get rid of it.

I remember when I first got married; I was 20 years old and in great condition. When I turned 21, my wife and I would have the occasional beer. After a while, drinking beer became an everyday thing because it was nice to have a cold one after work. I soon noticed that my stomach started to bulge out and I could tell by the scales that I was gaining weight pretty fast. This carried on for about 2 years until I decided to do something about it. Before I got married I was roughly 145lbs and was very active. After I realized that I was constantly gaining weight I weighed in at about 225lbs without and sort of exercise at all besides walking to work and back.

The first thing to remember is that fat is mostly stored in the stomach so when you start losing weight you should see a significant different in the belly region above all else.

The first step to getting rid of the beer gut is to calculate how many calories you are consuming daily, times that number by 7 (weekly caloric intake). Depending on the amount of weight you wish to lose per week, a pound of fat is roughly 3,000 calories. If you wanted to lose 2lbs a week (any more than that could be damaging to your health), you could take your weekly caloric intake and subtract 6,000 (2lbs) calories from that number, then divide by 7 to get your new daily caloric intake.

Counting calories is an old fashioned way of losing weight; you really need to watch what you eat as well. If you really would like to kick off the weight loss, try eating only vegetables, fruits, and lean meat for 2 weeks. Fruits and vegetables are usually low in calories and are healthy foods, so you can basically eat as much as you want without worrying about calories. You can eat lean meat for dinners just make sure you don't stuff yourself.

If you're like me, you probably like to have a beer every once in a while. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you drink a lot of beer I would recommend switching to a lighter beer such as Bud Light.

Another great thing to have in your life is water. There are so many benefits to drinking water. Drinking water can help you retain more water and you will feel like your stomach is full while it isn't.
