How to make a ballet bun

The perfect ballet bun is designed to be both beautiful and functional. It is usually held between the crown and the middle of the back of the head. It should also be held very tight in order to prevent it from falling out, and to maintain a clean and polished look for the ensemble.

When putting your hair in a ballet bun, it's a good idea to start with slightly damp hair as this will make it easier for you to keep your hair close to your head.

1. Collect the hair using your hands and then use a brush to comb it back making sure it's nice and tight.

2. Use a hair elastic to put your hair into a ponytail, wrapping the elastic as many times as possible. This will ensure the hair is nice and tight and that there are no stray bits sticking out.

3. Split the ponytail in two and plait each one individually. Try to keep the hair as tight into the plait as possible. If you have thick hair, instead of plaiting simply twist each ponytail.

4. Wrap each plait around the hair elastic, using pins and grips at the sides and top to make sure all hair is as tight into the bun as possible.

5. Use a little hair spray or spray gel to hold down any stray hairs, and place a bun net over the bun to hold it in place.

You now have the perfect ballet bun! you can decorate it with a crochet bun cover, hairband or scrunchie.

Where should I buy ballet accessories?

If you check out your local telephone directory you will almost certainly find a good specialist dancewear shop in your local area. Occasionally, you may find a few non-specialist dancewear shops but it's always better to go somewhere that specialises in dance. Even though they may be a little more expensive, they'll be able to provide you with the specialist advice and information you need.

If you're particularly price dependant then you will find a myriad of dancewear retailers online. Most of these offer leotards at very competitive prices and quick delivery too. Just remember to make sure they have a simple returns policy in case you need to try a couple of different sizes.
