How to manage your Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome or, IBS for short, can affect as many as one in five people

some time in their lives, often painful and some times annoying, but not dangerous in any way. There is no test for IBS, your doctor can only go on the symptoms that you present to him, at the time of your consultation. Your doctor will however, probably have a blood test taken to rule out any thing more sinister, like cancer. If your blood tests have come back normal, and you are diagnosed with IBS, what can you do to help the condition. The first thing to do, is to try and find out the cause which triggered your condition in the first place. This can vary a great deal from person to person, there is never one single cause that suddenly triggers IBS. Stress, eating spicy food, even cold can some times trigger the onset of irritable bowel syndrome. If you can remember what you were doing the first time your IBS started, this might help you to pin point the cause?

So, if your doctor, MD, has diagnosed IBS, what can you do to alleviate or, stop the condition from recurring. The bowel moves the contents along by smooth contractions, in IBS these contractions are normally stronger and some times painful, so painful, it can feel as if some one has grabbed your bowel and squeezed it hard. If you are getting a lot of noises, rumblings, this may suggest that your problem is higher up in the bowel, the duodenal. Now, to help get your bowel back on track again, into its normal rhythm, take an over the counter antispasmodic drug for at least a week. Look at your diet, I know a lot of doctors will advocate eating more fibre in your diet but, for a lot of people this can make their condition worse. There are two types of fibre, soluble, and insoluble, I find that the soluble fibre is the best one to eat, found in oats. I always have porridge oats for my breakfast, made with skimmed milk and two tsp of sugar.

Dont eat big meals, this can make you feel bloated but, do eat regular smaller meals. Make sure you are getting your vitamins and minerals, especially potassium and magnesium, these two minerals are needed for the contraction and relaxing of the muscles, bananas are a good source. Cut down on your intake of coffee and tea, the caffeine can some times trigger IBS in people, no more than four cups a day, and of course, alcohol. Cut down on the spicy food, fried food, and anything else that you feel might have triggered your IBS. Try and relax as much as possible, I know when you start to feel the onset of another bout of IBS, you begin to tense up because of the discomfort, this makes it worse. Go lie down on the bed on the side that you feel the pain, and bring the other knee up to the waist area, and breath slowly, I found this a great help.

You must never try and diagnose irritable bowel syndrome yourself, go and see your doctor, MD, and present him with your symptoms, always air on the side of caution.
