How to restore BKF files from Windows 2000 using a USB drive

NTBackup is a utility in the Windows NT systems that is used to create routine backups of valuable data in the form of BKF files. You can take the backup in various modes such as differential, incremental, etc and in various storage media as well. However, sometimes the BKF files fail to restore leaving you in the middle of nowhere as you may not be having any other copy of the BKF file to rely on. Such situations can occur due to various reasons such as power outages, interruptions during backup process, virus infections, etc. In such cases, you should repair BKF file using a third-party BKF repair tool.

Consider a scenario wherein you have a Windows 2000 system. You are trying to restore a BKF file in a USB drive. But, you are not able to restore the BKF file as the following error message is getting displayed:

"Required Media Missing

The next media required in the active family is not currently on-line.

Please insert the media:

Name_of_backup_media, media #0

or click Cancel to stop the current operation."

You get this error message even when you provide the correct media. When you click Cancel, then the following error message is displayed:

"Drive Error

The device reported an error on a request to mount the media.

Error reported: Unknown error.

There may be a hardware or media problem.

Please check the system event log for relevant failures."

Cause:

One of the main problems for this situation is that you are trying to restore the BKF file using a USB tape drive that uses the USB storage driver (Usbstor.sys). When this storage driver is used, it faces the I/O queuing issues that result in failed restoration process. The other reason for this problem is that the BKF file is corrupt.

Resolution:

To resolve this problem, check if you have the copy of the data of which you took the backup. If yes, then you can use that data. Or else, you should download and install Windows XP Service Pack 2 as a hotfix for this problem. Now, try to restore the BKF file using the NTBackup utility.

However, if the BKF file is still not getting restored then chances are that the BKF file is corrupt. To restore the BKF file, you should use a third-party BKF recovery software to repair BKF file. These BKF repair tools are read-only in nature that do not overwrite the original data.
