How to save on your vehicle's maintenance bill

Spending extra money in a higher octane gasoline is really a waste of time when the manufacturer has not recommended so. A grade higher does not prevent your engine from knocking. So save the few cents with regular octane and maybe treat your car to a car wash.

Over doing oil changes is worthless, 3,000 mile oil changes have no greater advantage to your vehicle than following your manufacturer's schedule maintenance. Most manufacturers have changed their maintenance schedule to an oil monitoring system where the car will indicate when it is due for service. Some oil changes are suggested to be done at 5,000 miles but some as long as 15,000 miles. It is in your best interest to look into the climate you live in, and your driving habits to determine when your services should be done. Twice a year is a good average.

Following schedule maintenance is beneficial for the car and your pocket. A low-profile tire may look better on your car but a set of snow tires will save your life. Replacing the timing belt at its recommended time will prevent breakdowns as oppose to repainting the car for minor scratches and or dents.

The words "tune up" may not even really exist on newer cars; most are now dealt with electronically. Replacing unnecessary parts will not help you or your pocket. If your car isn't chugging along, skipping a beat or making odd noises- spark plug replacement may not remedy your vehicle. Following the manufacturer's schedule maintenance is best. So when in doubt pick up your owner's manual and confirm what needs to be done and when.

Dealers will recommend the schedule services but you too have this information at hand, take a look at your owner's manual and confirm. It may be possible to find an independent garage that can do the work for you. If you choose to go this route, questioning the quality of work isn't wrong, so be careful in choosing one. If you were told that using an outside garage would void your car warranty it may not be completely true, so clarify with your manufacturer.

Choosing a dealer for oil changes can be more expensive; however dealers sometimes have great oil change specials, so call around. If you choose an independent garage for the first time, try to mark things like oil filters, tires etc. You will not know the integrity of the shop right away, but you can learn a lot about the shop with one simple oil change. If recommendations are made, to use synthetic oil or replace filters, decline the recommendations until you do your homework.

Replacing some easy parts yourself won't hurt, parts like wipers, air filters etc. You can go to the dealer and purchase the parts and replace them yourself, a five minute job could save you a few bucks here and there. If you don't mind aftermarket parts in your car, you could try that route as well.
