Who can dispute the beauty and elegance of plaster walls and ceilings when they are in good condition and well maintained? Who? I for one have always found plaster walls and ceilings to be regal and noble in appearance as opposed to the utilitarian worth and appearance of common drywall. Drywall serves its purpose true enough but when it comes to elegance and beauty no other wall/ceiling covering/finish comes remotely close to the grace and charm that plaster walls/ceilings exude. Throughout the millenniums plaster walls and ceilings as well as plaster ornamental trim have adorned magnificent castles, cathedrals, buildings and the homes of the rich and famous.

However, as durable as plaster is it can become susceptible to stress cracks, crevices, small holes and even large holes. Once the plaster has broken away from its keys that are located behind the lath it's not uncommon for the plaster to fall to the floor with the possibility of doing great harm. Over a period of time like most everything else plaster too will need repairs ranging from the superficial to complete restoration and/or major repairs. Finding a talented and dedicated contractor to do your repair work could be just a phone call away. But before you pick up the phone there are a few things I would like to make mention and hopefully provide you with a few pointers that will help you make the right selection when you do decide to choose a plaster repair contractor to repair your home or commercial building.

First of all there is an obvious difference between plaster installation which is done by a plasterer and plaster repair which may or may not be done by a plasterer. There are certain skills and techniques that are not taught in a plasterers' apprenticeship that must be utilized in plaster repair. Let's begin with superficial repairs; that is, repairs that only involves surface or substrate hairline cracks or mapping lines as they are commonly called by some craftsmen. Although these types of repairs are benign; if you will, they should be addressed in a manner to help prevent the recurrence of this problem, and to do that you will need to apply drywall tape over the crack(s). My preference is paper tape but you are free to use fiberglass mesh tape if that is your choice; both are acceptable and both will do the job.

The difference is with the paper type you will need to apply the compound before the drywall tape is installed but with the fiberglass mesh tape you will only need to cover the tape once it has been placed over the cracks. I personally choose to apply a setting compound over the cracks first and then place the paper drywall tape into the setting compound that covers the cracks and follow up with another coat of setting compound on top of the tape; therefore, the drywall tape is totally enmeshed in the setting compound and that makes me feel a little better about the situation than if I had only applied setting compound on top of the fiberglass mesh tape. Incidentally, the setting compound that I mentioned in the above paragraph is a powdered mixture that has properties of both plaster and drywall joint compound. The reason it is called "setting compound" is because it has chemicals mixed in it to determine its drying time. Those setting times range from five minutes to ninety minutes, but I have even heard of setting compounds that have a drying time of 180 minutes or an hour and a half. These setting compounds dry extremely hard and are very durable but they can be difficult to work with for the inexperienced.

Plaster repairs that are profound and most engaging requires a lot more skill, experience, and understanding to successfully tackled and correct. Many of these types of repairs require the removal of the wall/ceiling that has failed and getting down to the lath and even replacing or repairing it. It will also entail rebuilding the wall/ceiling in question and finally floating out the repaired area to create the illusion that the area was never disturbed in the first place. Remember, when selecting a plaster repairman or repair person make sure you have an indepth conversation about his/her plans to do the repair work. Have him/her give you a detailed outline of the work to be done and the manner in which it will be carried out. The more information you have the better you will be able to make an intelligent decision about the contractor you will choose to do the work. And as always check references and if possible take a look at his/her work. Take your time and just use caution and plain old common sense and you should do well. Thanks and I wish you success.
