How to tackle vocabulary in SAT

At least half of the words in the English language are derived from Greek and Latin roots. Knowing these roots helps us to grasp the meaning of words before we look them up in the dictionary. It also helps us to see how words are often arranged in families with similar characteristics.

Prefixes and suffixes are also helpful. Thinking of a word you already know that uses each prefix, suffix or root may help you understand what the word on the test means.
A new way to improve your SAT vocabulary is to play word games like Scrabble and Boggle. They will encourage your brain to play with words and letters helps you learning new ones. Word puzzles on most of the newspapers like crosswords, bulls' eye, simple cryptology puzzles, and jumbles also help improve your vocabulary. There are many books of word puzzles also available in the market.
An effortless way to improve your SAT vocabulary is to use the dictionary. The dictionary should be one of the most often used books in your home. Place the dictionary somewhere so that you can find it immediately and use it often. If you do your reading and homework in the kitchen and the dictionary is on a shelf in the den or bedroom, it's too tempting to say "I'll look it up next time."
Make flash cards of unfamiliar words and practice them in the train, on the bus, or when you wake up in the morning. It is not that one word is simply better than another. It is more a matter of picking the one that one suits the occasion. You do not put on climbing boots to go dancing.
Try to practice words in a variety of environments so that you really learn them, and make sure to use the words in daily sentences as well so that you can grow accustomed to using them correctly. If you hear someone using a word you don't recognize, look for its meaning. . Words learnt parrot-fashion simply will not stay in your head. Only words that you learn in context and that you make real use of in speech and writing are likely to become part of your active vocabulary.
Another way to improve SAT vocabulary is develop stories, songs or mnemonics to learn SAT vocabulary words. These methods generally work best for short-term retention and must be accompanied by more conventional approaches for optimal results.
Have a target of reading 17 new words a day.(depending on how much or how little time you have before you take the SAT). Make sure that you review your vocabulary flash cards every once in awhile, so you won't forget the ones you've already memorized A person's vocabulary is the set of words they are familiar with in a language. A vocabulary usually grows and evolves with age, and serves as a useful and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge.

Identification of sentence errors:
Read each sentence cautiously. If you find an error, select the underlined part that is incorrect. Some sentences contain no error, in which case choose answer E.
Example:
I enjoyed that trip more than any trip I have been this year. No error

The correct answer is c . Use of modifiers: we're comparing that movie and any other movie I have seen. We can't compare that movie and any movie I have seen because that movie is among the movies I have seen.
Sentence correction
Look at the sentence below. You would find that part of sentence is underlined. You should choose the answer choice which is the best version of the underlined part. Select the version which is the most effective expression - correct grammar, clear and unambiguous.
Example:
Knocking over the trashcan, debris flew everywhere.
trashcan, debris flew everywhere
trashcan I caused debris to fly everywhere
trashcan caused debris to fly everywhere
trashcan is what caused the debris to fly everywhere
trashcan resulted in the fact that debris flew everywhere
The correct answer is choice 3. In original sentence, knocking over the trashcan modifies debris. Choice2 would work if it had a comma after the introductory phrase. Choice4 and5 are unnecessarily wordy.
Each passage is a draft of a student's essay. Read the essay and answer the questions paying attention to correct grammar and effective expression. Some questions require you to consider the structure and development of the entire essay.
Try to use the words that you memorize in your conversation and writing. This is the best way to retain vocabulary. Think about a sentence that you can use your vocabulary in. Saying it out loud or writing it down will just solidify your understanding and memorization of the words
