Human Rights and the Environment
Although the awareness of environmental issues and human rights is gaining popularity nowadays, it is still possible to see some environmental problems such as contamination of natural resources, deforestation and desertification. All these problems are caused by human activities that are intended to meet the needs of the present. However, people should not be selfish and they should determine how to affect or use the environment with consideration of future generations' right to live in a clean and healthy environment.
Today, the word gets round that people must ensure 'sustainable development'. Its definition is ambiguous, but it can be said briefly that sustainable development means ensuring future generation's rights regarding the environment while satisfying present needs. Therefore, we can infer that when we cause environmental problems, we also violate future generation's rights. Deforestation is a good instance of this. Today we cause loss of trees in order to meet our needs such as paper and needs related to the furniture industry. However, in some parts of our world, this is becoming a grave problem, as we cause the absence of oxygen, which is provided by trees and is a necessary element for human life. In this way we violate future generations' right to clean air. In addition, contamination of natural resources is also a clear violation of the next generation's rights. Owing to poor urbanization plans we are polluting the water. This pollution can also be encountered because of acid rain, which we cause so as to ensure industrial growth. As a result, again this leads to violation of future generations' right to have clean water supplies.
In conclusion, the more environmental problems we cause, the more violation of future generations' rights there will be. Therefore, we should keep the environment pristine in order for future generations to have a clean and healthy environment. Also, we should not forget that the earth does not belong to humans, humans belong to the earth and everyone has to be aware of the fact that as we damage the environment, we not only cause the degradation of the environment, but we also cause the violation of future generations' rights.
