Human stampedes happen more regularly than most people realize. As from April 2001 there have been 29 human stampedes, which have killed approximately 3330 people and wounded thousands of others.
These stampedes occur most frequently during professional sporting, religious pilgrimages, or musical events. The victims appear to die from compressive asphyxiation (crowd crush), created from vertical stacking and horizontal pushing, rather than trampling.
In the latest stampede over eight teenage students were killed and many others injured during a stampede at a hugely overcrowded school in China.
378 people died and around 755 injured during a stampede at the annual three-day Water Festival, the most important holiday in Cambodia, which was the end of the rainy season. Up to 2 million people had travelled from all over the nation, to the capital Phnom Penh, to celebrate.
One report said that somebody had been electrocuted in the middle of the crowd. Another survivor reported he heard a police siren prior to the panic erupting. Others said that approximately 10 people fell unconscious in the centre of the crowd, creating panic, which then turned into a stampede.
As the panic rose, people tried to thrust their way across a narrow bridge off the island where a concert was being held. Dozens of people fell over the side of the bridge into the water.
Two Singaporean businessmen, who organized a sound-and-light show for the festival, reported authorities had closed another bridge off Diamond Island, forcing tens of thousands of people to make use of a single span, for both entering and leaving the island.
Local hospitals are hardly able to deal with day to day medical requirements, let alone an emergency of this size. It was reported that firefighters sprayed the crowd, apparently trying to calm mob down, while it was at least 1 hours before police and ambulances arrived at the scene.
The dead and injured were still being removed, hours after the chaos. It was also reported that the vast majority of the victims were women.
Millions of pilgrims attendeding the annual Muslim Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, have experienced numerous stampedes over the years.
During Hindu religious holidays stampedes occur regularly in India. These are recognized as temple crushes' and are usually created through railings giving way, as pilgrims climb steep hills to reach a temple.
