The idea of the Maid of Honor making a speech at a wedding is an idea that is catching on. No longer is it up to the best man to honor the bride and groom. The other side of the aisle is now able to join in on the fun. Yes, fun. Weddings are a celebration and celebrations are supposed to be fun. If fun is off limits for a wedding, just call it a funeral and call it a day.

"And now, the Maid of Honor"

The Maid of Honor speech typically will follow the Best Man's speech. The Maid of Honor can toast the bride or both. It isn't necessary to be an equal opportunity toaster.

A story or a little known fact about the bride always makes the most entertaining story. It should be humorous and fun and a tiny bit embarrassing. Not embarrassing to the point you have one less friend when you leave the wedding but embarrassing to the point of it being memorable. Just don't make it blushing memorable.

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman. Welcome to my friend's wedding. I hope you all get a chance to meet her first husband before you leave here today" as you point to the groom who is probably wondering who you are talking about. This will be a test of his sense of humor. Just make sure he has one before you start testing it in front of an audience.

"I have known my friend since we were kids. She has a lot of idiosyncrasy's that are not your typical, run of the mill characteristics for a person from a somewhat sane family. I always thought she was adopted, but her mother assured me she wasn't adopted. They got her the old fashioned way: a late night movie, a bottle of wine and a 1978 Gremlin.

If you are sure her parents would banish you from the rest of the wedding, you might want to leave that last part out, or arrange to give your speech when they have had slightly to much of the giggle juice.

"There is one important thing her new husband does not know about my best friend that he should. It will be in his best interest to add this to his "New Wife 101" fact sheet.

"I know you haven't discovered this yet, but my friend's idea of making you a gourmet meal is to make her way to the local fast food restaurant and add an apple pie to the value meal. As soon as she arrives home, she will put the bag of food on a flat pan and put it in an unheated oven. Imagine your surprise when you come home from work and she tells you your dinner is in the oven. I know what your first thought will be. "She found the oven and she figured out what to do with it. Oh Happy Day!" Make her day and mention what a good job she did by not melting the ketchup packets in the oven. If you just pretend to appreciate her thoughtfulness, the rest of the evening will go smoothly."

At the end of your speech, remember to thank everyone for being a good sport.
