Hundreds Years Of History In Portugal!

Within the area you can easily notice vora's very first surviving building

, Templo de Diana (the temple of Diana), generally it was created around the second century, around 300 hundred years right after the Romans initially occupied. The temple prevails as a strong perseverant structure, surviving the earthquake of 1755, and coming to serve rather grizzly features as an execution site during the inquisition, and afterwards as a slaughterhouse right up until 1870.

There are few survivors that old but within this city you can flow easily through second millennium, just as the grand Aqueduto da gua de Prata (Aqueduct of Silver Water) which has swept through vora since its construction mid 15th century. You can't miss it as it travels through eight kilometres, with houses built under its arches as not a centimetre is wasted in this town.

A building that is not be forsaken by any tourist or visitor is the Cathedral here, the largest of Portugal's medieval cathedrals and one of the finest examples of the Gothic Architecture, that prevails through the country. Inside the Cathedral takes on the Romanesque design, as common within the country, boasting of the Roman Catholic's taste for Gold in the glorification of worship. There is the fascinating Museum of Sacred Art here, featuring some wonderful pieces such as the sceptre of Cardinal-King Henrique, an impressive 16th century goldsmith work in the distinctive Manueline style (a very Portuguese reappropriation of the Gothic style). Then there is the 17th century relic Santo Lenho (holy wood), said to contain pieces of Christ's cross, amongst gilded silver and 1426 true gems. Within the collection of paintings are pieces from the Renaissance including works by Gregrio Lopes, Cristvo de Figueiredo and Garcia Fernandes. Making your way up to the roof of the Cathedral you will find a fine view of the city of vora.

A landmark that has drawn in the more macabre breed of tourists is the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones), which resides in the Royal Church of St Francis. True to its name this building is lined with human bones and skulls, it's a creepy sensation to look at walls made from the remnants of the living and not a place to be alone after the lights go out as it becomes easy to imagine them coming alive as Roy Harryhausen stop animations in 'Jason and the Argonauts'.

As with all Portugal in vora you should take the time to eat and drink well, a local speciality being the Carne de Porco Alentajana, a combination of Pork and Clams with Coriander and Potatoes, which is a perfect dish for a summer's day. Also popular here are the soups, specialising in fish, tomato and gazpacho. And don't forget to try the sweets, the area is famous for its pastelarias, and Pastelaria Conventual has a reputation of serving the best, furthermore being hidden away from the main strips, it has all the satisfaction of being a tucked away gem.

At the evenings end you can relax in your vacation rentals in Portugal, having picked your way through all the fine wine the region has to offer, bottles of Cartuxa go down well next to the sun lit pool as it glows orange, the wine going down perhaps too well. There is so much on offer here, it is a perfect town for spending a few days in glad of a short term rental nearby, allowing you to see every nook and cranny of the town, all the stories it has seen, all the history clamouring for your attention. Then experiencing all the other treasures of the Alentejo region.
