We are quite lucky in the UK not to experience too many hurricanes, but they are becoming more common and we need to make sure that we are prepared should a hurricane hit where we live. In America and the Caribbean they are all the more likely to hit, with Hurricane Season a worry to all inhabitants of these countries.

If you have children, ensure that they know where the safest part of the house is in case of bad weather, this might be a room that is safe, or like in an earthquake, a doorway or somewhere where they don't risk being squashed, but ensure they know exactly what to do. Put emergency numbers in places where your kids can reach them.

Think of a place you could go if it was too dangerous to be in your home. Hotels and local places of accommodation obviously fill up quickly when homes are evacuated, so think more of a friend or relative that is close enough for you to stay with. It may be a bit of a drive but if it puts you and your family in safety it is well worth the trip.

Have a pack that you can just grab if the weather starts to really get bad, with water, credit cards, a mobile phone and a small first aid kit in. Keep it in the boot of the car or somewhere accessible if your home becomes too dangerous to stay in. Think about where you will be going to and what they will have or won't have. Pack blankets in case there is traffic to keep everyone comfortable.

Also have a backup plan to your vehicle as if the weather conditions get really bad you may not be able to take it with you.

Have a plan for the pets, as if you are planning to go to a local hotel they may not be pet friendly. they can't stay at home, but is there somewhere you can take them?

Make sure that you have Home Contents Insurance to protect your home and belongings from the event of a hurricane.
