Guitar is one of the most common first-hand musical instruments for most beginners

. However, if I want to learn guitar basics, I must understand that I will need to develop the sense of dedication and discipline as it is similar in learning my first word when I was taught to speak or my first step when I was motivated to walk.

1. First thing, I must know my new toy. Guitar belongs to the family of string instruments that consist of a body and a neck where the strings are attached. These strings, generally six in numbers, are being played by means of the fingers or a pick. Traditional guitars were made up of wood and nylon or steel strings however the modern ones are now composed of polycarbonate materials. Basically, guitars are classified into acoustic and electric families with the following differences:

Acoustic guitars are generally hollow with six strings. Since it is hollow, it then produces a loud sound. This type of guitar is often associated with all styles of music such as folk music, country, R&B and heavy metal.

Electric guitars on the other hand, have more electronic parts than that of the acoustic guitar. It has more bells and whistles for example. The other major difference from acoustic guitar is that it is not hollow, therefore producing a soft sound and would therefore require an amplifier to project the sound. The advantage of electric guitar over acoustic guitar is that it is generally lighter and easier to play. Another difference between the two is on their roles to music; electric guitar is for "guitar leads" as well as chords while acoustic guitar is used to strum chords.

2. After understanding the types of guitars, I can now proceed on identifying and understanding its mechanisms and parts. The first part would be the headstock that is actually the top of the guitar when it is standing on its body. The tuning knobs could be found in the headstock. Along the headstock is the neck that consists of a long piece of wood having metal vertical bars that are segregated into segments called fret. The location of ach fret will determine your finger placing on the strings. The first fret could be found in the first segment from the headstock and take note that this is the farthest fret from your body. Remember that the fret gets nearer the guitar body as you count higher.
