On 9 march 2010, finally rajya-sabha passed the women reservation bill
. But the question arises " will it make any difference in current politics"?
First thing comes in my mind is " is there really need of women reservation'? In today's world where the women is equivalent to men there is no need of such type of quota. Reservation is a curse for any country or organization and it shows about the weakness and inability to express itself. In India where about 34% women is stillilliteratehow can anyone expect that women can handle thisdemocraticpolitics. The education, efficiency and merits seems to be recessive in front of reservation. By denying some people right to get elected, just because of their gender parliament is loosing its legitimacy.
As women were free to contest in election, why we are congesting them in 33% quota. Whoever has the efficiency and appropriate education should contest in election irrespective of gender bias or majority/minority discrimination. Let the women come in full majority if they have talent.
This bill is a source of debate and criticism since when it is passed. Well, it may be due to--
1. The choice will be restricted to choose only female candidates.
2. A male legislator would not be allowed to contest from the same constituency again.
3. In future, the number of seats may be high.
4. Male candidates can use their power through known female representatives.
We should think again in this direction before implementing this bill in actual. Is that just a matter of reservation or a political gimmick.
