Ideas On How To Remove Tonsil Stones
Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, are hard, yellowish
, globules in the back of throat. They are formed when mucus from the nasal passages, bacteria and food particles build up in the crypts of the tonsils. Small tonsilloliths can be barely noticeable and are often swallowed or expelled in a cough. As the stones grow larger, they can begin to cause irritation or discomfort. Read on for some suggestions on how to remove tonsil stones without a doctor's assistance.
It's sometimes possible to loosen tonsilloliths without the need to put anything in your mouth. Rubbing the tongue against the back of the throat may do the trick. Or try holding your head back, raising your tongue to the roof of your mouth and swallowing.
One common method to remove stones is to press a finger or moistened cotton swab against the bottom of the tonsil and push upward to squeeze them out. The downside to doing this is that it can stimulate the gag reflex. To prevent this you could try first coating your tonsils with an anesthetic throat spray.
If you prefer a gentle way to loosen the stones gradually over time, try drinking several glasses of a carbonated, sugar-free drink such as soda water every day. Gargling daily with a vinegar and water solution is also recommended.
An ear curette is a tool for removing ear wax that is often included in grooming kits containing tweezers and nail clippers. It has a tiny shallow spoon at the end that some people find useful for dislodging tonsilloliths.
You can try using pressurized water to flush the stones from the crypts. Simply fill a clean turkey-baster with water, point it at your tonsil and squeeze the bulb to release a jet of fluid. If you happen to have a Waterpik irrigator, you can be a little more precise. Be sure to adjust it to its lowest setting so as not to harm the tonsils.
A medicine dropper can be used to remove small tonsil stones through suction. First, use the dropper to coat your tonsils with salt water. This can help make the stones easier to see. Next, squeeze the bulb of the dropper and point the tip at a stone. When you release the bulb, the stone should be sucked into the tube.
If you experiment with other home remedies for removing tonsilloliths, use your common sense. Never put small, sharp objects into your mouth. A toothpick or needle could not only seriously harm your tonsils, it could become dangerously lodged in your throat. Do not attempt any method that could damage delicate tissues.
It's helpful to know how to remove tonsil stones, but it's better to avoid getting them in the first place. If you keep your mouth a bacteria-free zone, they have little chance of forming. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and gargle with an antiseptic mouthwash. Make brushing or scraping your tongue part of your oral-health routine. If you can do so without gagging, gently brush the surface of your tonsils to remove small stones before they become irritating.
