Many people that want to run for political office can be excused for thinking that
the first place to start would be to do a bit of research on some previous elections. They may even be excused for thinking that they will have to compile a donor list before anything else.
Well to be honest I would say that you need to start a little closer to home to begin with. No matter what the outcome of your election there is one factor that must come first and that is your family.
No matter whether you are running for local council or something a little smaller it is your family that will undoubtedly be your biggest supporters in this cause.
Whenever you run for any office or run any campaign there is going to be a lot of stress involved with it. This will impact directly on your family especially when you are running to tight schedules.
You must always try to include your family in everything that you do in the campaign. It is also advisable that even before you contemplate running for any elections that you first ask your other half to see what their opinion is of this venture.
If you have the full support of your spouse then it may be a good idea to let your children know your intentions and see how they feel about it. There could be a lot of sacrifices that have to be made along the way so it is far better to have everybody understand this from the outset than to get upset later on.
As well as the stress that comes with the election and all its planning there will also be a different kind of stress should you win. Most of the local office positions may be only part time jobs but you will still have to dedicate a lot of your time in order to do your job effectively.
So no matter how important you feel the election is, always remember that your family is more important. If you can go through this with their help and support then it will make the whole journey even more memorable.
