Illinois Medicare - Medicare Advantage Plans
Many recipients of Illinois Medicare have opted to receive their benefits though
private health insurance companies rather than working through the original Medicare plan. These plans are also known as Part C. They are not considered supplemental plans, but entire plans that replace Medicare Part A and Part B. These plans vary in cost and coverage the same way regular health care plans do. Out of pocket expenses also vary from one plan to another. To enroll, you must already have Medicare Part A and B. Though there are some caveats, most people can join a Medicare Advantage Plan even if they have pre-existing conditions.
To initially enroll, change plans or to drop Illinois Medicare Advantage Plans there are specific enrollment periods each year. If you miss the enrollment, you must wait until the following year. When you first become eligible for Medicare you have seven months to enroll. This timeframe begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month and ends three months later. The Annual Enrollment period is between November 15th and December 31st each year, with coverage changes beginning on January 1. Open Enrollment takes place during the first calendar quarter each year.
Coverage and benefits are put into place the first day of the month after the enrollment form has been received. The Illinois Department of Insurance urges beneficiariess to review their plan coverage. This includes ensuring you understand the coverage options you have signed up for and confirming the prescription portion of the plan meets your medication and budget requirements. When choosing an Illinois Medicare Advantage Plan, there are many points you should compare to ensure it is the right fit for your current needs. Confirm that all of your regular prescriptions are on the plan's list of approved drugs and that your pharmacy is "in network"
The Illinois Department of Insurance suggests talking with the plan's provider if you have questions to ensure you do not need to make additional modifications. Illinois Medicare beneficiaries also have the option of talking with a representative in the state's SHIP program for one on one counseling services. These are free sessions developed to assist residents during open enrollments. There are also many companies that have chosen not to renew their contracts with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). If your plan is currently with one of these companies, a new option will need to be selected.
