Implants Help You Keep Your bite
The Optimum Solution to Missing Teeth
The Optimum Solution to Missing Teeth
About fourteen hundred years ago, believe it or not, the first dental implant was performed judging from archaeological digs from the ancient Mayan civilization of 600 A.D.
What you probably wont find hard to believe is that dental implant technology has advanced considerably from the case of the twenty-year old Mayan maiden who apparently had tooth-shaped shell pieces placed in the sockets of her missing incisors.
If youve lost teeth for whatever reason injury, tooth decay, gum disease or another factor you may want to consider dental implants rather than just a bridge or denture solution.
Implants are much stronger and more durable than either of those other options, and are a permanent solution. Also, they can work to anchor a bridge or denture and make these restorative processes much more stable.
Most importantly, implants allow you to bite and chew almost as well as your original teeth which is definitely not the case with dentures. Many seniors have marveled at the difference if theyve experienced dentures first, then implants.
The procedure for the modern dental implant was actually developed by a Swedish orthopedic surgeon, P. I. Brnemark, in 1952, when he discovered that the metal titanium had the unique property of actually merging with bone when planted in proximity to it. He named this process Osseo integration, and, after much trial-and-error, he decided the mouth was the ideal place to use this discovery. In 1965, he performed the first dental implant on a very brave Swede volunteer.
Patients dont really have to be brave any longer when it comes to dental implants, as, over the years, its become a very routine cosmetic dentistry procedure that doesnt require a big investment in terms of time or money. Implanting a single tooth is now a relatively simple out-patient procedure that can take under an hour at a reasonable cost. The success rate of implants is also sky-high, with mostly smokers facing a moderate possibility of problems down the line.
You can be a candidate for a dental implant after adolescence or any time after bone growth is complete. If you suffer from a condition such as active diabetes, cancer or gum disease, additional treatment could be needed before the procedure can be done. Your bone density and quantity should also be evaluated to make sure the implant wont need additional support. And again, if you are a smoker, you should strongly consider kicking the habit before implants are put in.
