Tooth loss can be a result of an accident or injury

, an illness or caused by weak tooth because of age or heredity. This can be replaced with a tooth implant. Tooth implant will replace the original tooth like it is the authentic one. A single tooth implant does not involve or impair your other teeth. It is kept clean in precisely the same way as your other teeth.

Dental implants are commonly used in prosthetic dentistry where false replacements are provided like natural teeth. The tooth design is similar to the implants in order to properly affix it and provide patients a more stable and better looking tooth.

There are different kinds of implants:

1. The conventional type where it is very stable and it stays under the gums for a longer period of time; which is 3-6 months.

2. Mini-implants are smaller and are made of titanium, it holds bridges and crowns as well as denture bases.

The procedure is normal. The dentist will make a tiny incision into your gum in order to access the jawbone. A drill is inserted to the jawbone creating a small hole before inserting the implant. The implant looks like a cylindrical rod but smaller in shape. The tooth implant is inserted to the jawbone. The incision should be given time to heal for a period of 3-6 months. By that time, the implant will fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Once this has happened, another procedure will be carried out. The dentist will open the original wound before fixing a small attachment, this will enable him to fasten an artificial tooth or restoration to the abutment.

Dental implant is normally done by an implant dentist who will apply a local anesthesia before the whole process is done. The procedure is not painful and any potential reactions after that are bearable with the right medications. The surgery will only last an hour depending on how many implants are done. Patients can immediately leave the clinic after the minor surgery.

Single tooth plants are usually straightforward, but there is a condition called poor soft tissue result. If the tissue of the gum has not been properly dealt then the implant will end up with dark line around the restoration. In some cases, the gum is so thin that the implant itself is visible. From an aesthetic point of view this looks unattractive and unwanted, one way of dealing with this is by soft tissue grafting, which means taking thicker gum tissue from the palate and grafting this onto the area which holds the implant.

Instant procedure is becoming more popular but be aware that there is a greater risk of failure than with the normal two staged procedure.
