If this web site they ended up in is also selling similar products as you or also has a blogging site similar to yours then you just drove your traffic to them. You do not want your competition to have your intended traffic just because of the domain.

With so many names already taken it may be hard to purchase the domain to match your site name. What you can do is first choose a catchy name that is still available. If you do it the other way around, where you first name your site then try to name the domain after it, you can have a difficult time purchasing the matching domain.

When you have thought out a catchy you can then enter it at the address bar to see if it is available. Majority of times when it is for sale it will have the instructions on the site to purchase it. It will tell you who to contact or where to go in order to purchase that site.

If you are set on a name and absolutely want it but it is owned you can still try to obtain it. You can look around in the site for the contact information. Once you have obtained that you can proceed to contact them and make them an offer for it and see if they are willing to negotiate. Of course they can charge several hundred dollars in order to accept an offer with you.

Your domain can also bring traffic to your website by a search engine. In order for this to fully work, you should use keywords as your domain instead of your store's name. When a person enters the matching keywords on a search engine your web site will be one of the sites listed on the engine results. This is one way to drive a lot of traffic that is looking for what you are selling to your site.

After choosing which domain you want to use you also have to figure out which suffix to use. Some suffix include the dot com, dot biz, dot gov among many others. The most common of all of course is the dot com. This does not mean that your website will not be found if you use dot biz. This can still be an option if the domain you wanted is taken under the suffix dot com.

These are just some of the things that you can do to have the domain name of your choice. If it is not available you can either choose another name or use these options mentioned to still have people find your website. Some of these domains can cost several hundred dollars to obtain.
