Sports nutrition deals specifically with the food and fluid to eat and drink throughout the day.

The goal of sports nutrition is to enhance athletic performance. It improves body composition while increasing speed, quickness and strength. Athletes are always on the lookout to increase their performance and therefore consider taking dietary supplements.

Dietary protein intake for trained athletes should be before, during and after physical activity since it is advantageous in gaining muscle mass and strength. It should be noted however that if too much protein and amino acid supplements are consumed it could prove harmful to the body instead of beneficial. The sports nutrition deals with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and substances such as carbohydrates, sugars and proteins. It illustrates how an athlete should apply the necessary nutrition in order to benefit from training and to enhance their capability during exercise. These types of strategic planning and diet also increases immunity and allow one to stay healthy and intensify training. It also improves overall health of an athlete.

Research has proved that milk, especially skim milk and chocolate milk may be the new sports drink since milk leads to protein which boosts net muscle protein balance and while milk naturally contains many nutrients that help to make it a post exercise beverage. Research also suggests that chocolate milk, when compared to plain water or sports drinks, is more effective at replacing fluids lost as sweat and maintaining normal body fluid levels.
