When considering Internet Marketing one must think about the many different ways

that a consumer is likely to search for, and ultimately find, your product. You may have a beautiful website, but if those customers who do not already know your name, cannot find your business when they are searching for someone within your industry, the website is no good.

So, what is a long tail search? Long tail searches are a series of words put together by the end user, or the person performing the search, to help narrow results. As an example, one may need a pest control company. While the keywords "pest control" may get more then 500K searches per month using those exact keywords, we often forget about the various other ways a pest control company may be searched on the web, such as "organic pest control", "gardening pest control", or "pest control Houston". The various ways pest control can be searched for include a qualifier after or before the main idea. These are sometimes referred to as a geo-qualifier, such as "Houston".

If you consider the thousands of ways people can search and try to focus on those terms or long tail searches that are used most often, your page rank (or placement on a search engine results page such as Google) will increase. Let's assume that each long tail approach gets 10k searches per month and there are 100 different long tail searches, that is potentially a million searches per month that you can be a part of with the right Internet marketing tools. While the 100 long tail searches individually perform at a rate lower than the main idea, if you add up the total of the combined searches, the long tail approaches actually account for more searches conducted. In the example above, "Pest Control" gets 500K searches per month but 100 long tail approaches each receiving 1k searches per month totals one million searches. If you include those specific words and key phrases, your chances of coming up closer to the first spot are far greater.
