There are a number of theories as to the origin of the city's name. Some people believe that it was called 'Allis Ubbo', which is Phoenician for 'safe harbor'. Another school of thought states that the city was named after the Tagus River, which was formerly known as 'Lucio' or 'Lisso'. The city was established along this river.

The tower, which was built in 1515, is a symbol of Portuguese exploration.
