Important Pool Safety

The pool can be a great place for everyone to enjoy themselves on a hot summer day, however, if proper safety techniques are not used, serious injury could occur. When playing at the pool, it should be understood that running, diving, and excessive rough housing is not permitted. If any of these activities are committed, be aware that you are endangering your life. It is also a vital that parents invest in swim lessons of some kind before leaving them to their own devices.

No running at the pool is the most common and the most obvious of all the pool rules. The ground around the pool gets slippery; if you run on a slippery surface you will slip and hurt yourself. Pools are made of concrete that does not cushion a fall on your head very well. Also, if you are running round the pool you are putting other people's safety in danger. One slip and you could trip someone around you and they could fall right on their head.

Diving in a pool is meant for an actual diving pool. Diving pools are deeper than normal pools and allow enough water for the diver to fall through before touching the surface at the bottom. In an average pool, the deep end is only 6ft; this is not enough water to properly stop the diver before hitting the bottom. If you dive into a 6-foot pool, you will hit the bottom very hard and possibly hurt yourself. Diving headfirst should be even more of a restriction because falling on your head is never a good idea.

Rough housing can be fun, but people need to know what a reasonable amount of horseplay is. When children begin physically hurting each other, or forcefully pushing and shoving somebody will get hurt and possibly seriously injured. One thing to be aware of when children rough house in the pool is to make sure that they are not submersing each other. The last thing you want is for a young boy to accidently drown his friend. They do not know any better, it can easily happen.

Remember, there isn't always a lifeguard to watch and maintain safety rules at all times. Parents and older kids must be responsible and not allow for their children to run around the pool, dive into the pool, or roughhouse extensively with each other in the water. If everyone obeys these rules it will be a fun-relaxing day at the pool.
