One way of building backlinks is to write articles. Just as I mentioned in my example above, write articles about your website or your niche and include links in them that go back to your site. Your article will take on the popularity of the site that you submitted your article to, and that will determine the quality of your backlink. The more popular the article directory the better quality backlink you will get. Search engines loves good quality backlinks.
Another great way to build backlinks is to do a search for blogs or other articles that are related to your niche or website. Read those articles or blog posts and then leave a relevant useful comment with a link to your website in your comment. Just be sure that you do not spam. I am not a supporter of spam. Make sure that your comments are well written comments on the topic at hand.
Another thing that I do to help build backlinks is include my website in my signature line in forums that I am active in. As I just mentioned though, I am not a fan of spam, so I only leave it in forums that I do actively participate in. I also be sure to only leave my website if it is relevant to the forum in some way. This also has gotten referred traffic to my websites, and an increase in traffic means an increase in popularity which will improve page rank. It is a win-win situation.
